Roots to Soul: Come Feel What the Music Remembered

Now y’all already know when Vision Community Theatre Group of Wilson, Inc. puts something on the stage, we don’t just “put on a show.”

We gather.

We remember.

We laugh a little, move a little, clap a little harder than we planned to, and somewhere between the music and the lights, something in us wakes up.

That is the spirit behind Roots to Soul, our upcoming musical production written and produced by Toshika Johnson-Davis, coming to the stage on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the Edna Boykin Multicultural Center in Wilson, North Carolina.

And baby, this one has rhythm all through it.

Roots to Soul is a musical journey celebrating Black Music Month, but it is also more than that. It is a love letter. It is a thank-you note. It is a front porch memory, a church clap, a family reunion two-step, a Sunday morning hum, a Saturday night groove, and that one song that still makes your auntie close her eyes and say, “Turn that up.”

This production is about the music that raised us, carried us, corrected us, comforted us, and made room for us when the world did not always know what to do with our sound.

From gospel to blues, from jazz to soul, from funk to R&B, from rock and roll to the rhythms that still keep our feet moving today, Black music has always been more than entertainment. It has been survival with harmony. Joy with a backbeat. History with a melody. Testimony wrapped in rhythm.

And that is what we are bringing to the stage.

When you look at the flyer, you can already feel it. The colors are alive. The singers are lifted. The saxophone is talking. The dancers are moving. The whole thing looks like music jumped off the page and said, “Meet me at the theater.”

That is the energy we want you to walk into.

Not stiff.

Not quiet.

Not just sitting there politely waiting for the curtain to close.

We want you to feel invited. We want you to bring somebody with you. Bring your mama. Bring your cousin. Bring your church friend. Bring the person who says they don’t go anywhere anymore. Bring the young folks so they can see what legacy looks like when it sings back. Bring the elders so we can honor the songs they carried before us.

Because Roots to Soul is for the community.

It is for Wilson.

It is for every person who knows that music can reach places regular words cannot.

The show will take place at the Edna Boykin Multicultural Center, located at 108 Nash Street NE, Wilson, NC. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and showtime begins at 7:00 PM.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
